PREFACE
Part F of the Manual covers Bureau of Engineering sewer design. It presents the design
criteria, standards, policies, and procedures to the new Engineer and provides a reference
source for the experienced Engineer. These criteria, standards, policies and procedures
are intended as guidelines. Each sewer project should be considered unique. The criteria
shall, insofar as possible, be followed but cannot supplant the application of sound
engineering judgment by the Engineer. Other policies, practices, procedures and processing
operations related to sewer design are covered in other Parts of the Bureau Manual.
It is presumed that users of this Manual have certain minimum qualifications and
proficiencies. Therefore, Part F of this Manual is not intended as a textbook in sewer
design. It is intended that the user, having certain minimum qualifications and
proficiencies, will be able to understand the policies and practices detailed in this
Manual and design sanitary sewers competently.
It shall be presumed that the user has acquired proficiency in:
a.Mathematics - including college level Algebra, Plane Geometry and Trigonometry.
b.Hydraulics - including hydrostatics, pressure flow in pipes, open channel flow, both
steady and non steady, as well as uniform and nonuniform.
c.Engineering statics and dynamics.
